My Grampy used to take care of me, and he watched it with me a million times. </div><div><br></div><div>After one snowfall, we built a snowman together. I was devastated when it didn't come to life. I was a very young and a very determined little girl. I told my Grampy tearfully that it was the wrong hat!! He tried to construct a hat out of black paper to look like his hat in the movie. Still no "Happy Birthday" came out of his mouth.</div><div><br></div><div>I can remember that day so clearly, and I'm not quite sure why it has always stuck with me in such a strong way...but I loved my Grampy. So, here are my snowmen here in GA...</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-eu94SNx9HR0/VHPxiRMPKlI/AAAAAAAAAzM/whO_fXf-dGM/s640/blogger-image-1982404690.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-eu94SNx9HR0/VHPxiRMPKlI/AAAAAAAAAzM/whO_fXf-dGM/s640/blogger-image-1982404690.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-10243056111025456192014-11-24T10:00:00.001-05:002014-11-26T09:31:06.835-05:00Olaf Lightbulb Ornament<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s0s4FXghQ-Y/VHXaRw3c6jI/AAAAAAAAAzo/klsUN1zz-qw/s640/blogger-image--413582919.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s0s4FXghQ-Y/VHXaRw3c6jI/AAAAAAAAAzo/klsUN1zz-qw/s640/blogger-image--413582919.jpg"></a></div><br></div>I make a different ornament each year as my "Annual Ornament." I use my annual ornament as gifts for friends and family, as well as my children. Each year of my childrens' lives I have made them at least one special ornament. This year, I decided to make Olaf, since Frozen is big this year! <div><br></div><div>Materials:</div><div>-light bulbs (old style, I have been collecting used light bulbs for a long time)</div><div>-white acrylic paint</div><div>-orange acrylic paint</div><div>-light blue acrylic paint</div><div>-black paint pen, fine tip</div><div>-brown pipe cleaners</div><div>-hot glue and glue gun</div><div>-an old box and a utility knife (to make a drying stand)</div><div><br></div><div>Step one: carefully wash all light bulbs. If they are dusty the paint will not adhere properly.</div><div><br></div><div>Step two: After all bulbs are completely dry, paint them white. Use a light coat of paint and then after it has completely dried carefully add a second coat. If you are impatient and do not wait long enough--the paint will peel off</div><div><br></div><div>Step three: draw two circles for the eyes (see photo). The eyes should be touching, and the right eye should be slightly smaller. Add pupils and fill them in.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vySpeG-soTc/VHXaXLzX25I/AAAAAAAAA0Q/jT7YrUbd7vQ/s640/blogger-image-120820949.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vySpeG-soTc/VHXaXLzX25I/AAAAAAAAA0Q/jT7YrUbd7vQ/s640/blogger-image-120820949.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div>Step four: draw a curve for the first part of his nose. <br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nmKGGnDQbak/VHNBjzjx6II/AAAAAAAAAyE/VGeNakQ58rk/s640/blogger-image-60994505.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nmKGGnDQbak/VHNBjzjx6II/AAAAAAAAAyE/VGeNakQ58rk/s640/blogger-image-60994505.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div>
Ok, so Home Depot once again was not clear on their advertising and they were VERY inconsistent from store to store. They advertised that the November "Do it Herself" workshop would involve a lighted holiday marquee, inspired by Ana White. Also, there was a FULL PAGE ad in HGTV magazine bragging of gift bags sponsored by HGTV that all attendees would get to take home. <div><br></div><div> Some reported that their gift bag was an empty paper bag! My store gave us each a lovely poinsettia and some Home Depot swag.
I heard horror stories from across the country: They didn't have it set up at one store. </div><div><br></div><div> One store charged a $35 materials fee. At my mom's store everybody made one out of styrofoam, but they had so many people show up they were panicked and my mom and her friend left to go shopping instead.</div><div><br></div><div> I stayed for a little bit, but then had to go to my sons' concert. One was playing percussion and the other the french horn. However, I did hear murmurings of disappointment in the room that people weren't going to be able to make their own.
I REALLY wanted one, so I thought about how it would be easier to make. </div><div><br></div><div>Anything would be easier than trying to cut the letters out myself. Here it is:
</div><div><br></div><div>Materials List: </div><div>~Pre-cut out wooden letters to spell out the word of your choice </div><div> ~These particular letters are $3.99 at Hobby Lobby, I purchased them for 50% off. Letters are also available at Walmart for $1.97 </div><div> ~Paint in the colors of your choice. The red was $.50 and the iridescent white was $1.97 at Walmart </div><div>~A set of lights. These gem lights are wired, and it is $9.97 for a set of 60 at Walmart. If you choose a shorter word, (such as JOY) a set of 30 should be sufficient. </div><div>~Liquid Nails or another strong adhesive (wood glue will also work) </div><div>~Glitter, if you want your home to sparkle like mine does </div><div>~White glue if you wish to make snowflakes as accents </div><div>~A piece of wood for the background: I used a 12X24X48 piece of pine which cost about $8. If you have plywood or other wood lying around anything the proper size will work.</div><div> ~A drill with a 7/16 inch bit (if you use the gem lights) <div><br></div><div> Step One: Paint
Apply paint to the letters and the background. Be sure to paint the edges of the letter. My letters were white when I bought them, and I put about 3 coats of the pearly white paint on them.
I put only one coat of the red on the pine board.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wUZkN3PInbs/VHNBk2UZxsI/AAAAAAAAAyM/O7TUkAe0KXk/s640/blogger-image--803165349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wUZkN3PInbs/VHNBk2UZxsI/AAAAAAAAAyM/O7TUkAe0KXk/s640/blogger-image--803165349.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-kOoNkO3l-B8/VHNBhJG-22I/AAAAAAAAAxs/NUFJuI5QNek/s640/blogger-image-1625004417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-kOoNkO3l-B8/VHNBhJG-22I/AAAAAAAAAxs/NUFJuI5QNek/s640/blogger-image-1625004417.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div> Step Two: Position your letters on the piece of wood, and glue them down. You must let the glue dry overnight in order for it to work 100%. The liquid nails does take awhile, as does regular wood glue.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PhV1b7pNOGY/VHNBjP9IfnI/AAAAAAAAAx8/O3MjqARKuP8/s640/blogger-image--12784407.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PhV1b7pNOGY/VHNBjP9IfnI/AAAAAAAAAx8/O3MjqARKuP8/s640/blogger-image--12784407.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div> Step Three: Mark the spots where you would like to place your lights. On mine, I put the lights about 2.5" apart. This is going to depend on how large the lights you choose are. Smaller lights can be put closer together, and larger lights can be put farther apart ONLY if there is enough cord in between each light. </div><div><br></div><div> Step Four: Drill holes. Choose a drill bit that is LARGER than the base of the light (the part that is green) so that it can be pushed through from the back. However, your bit should be SMALLER than the top of the light (the bulb or if using LED lights, the part that is going to get put on from the front). In my case, the led lights slip through the back and the gem covers snap on through the front.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pGHXYMjBZgo/VHNBlzksTII/AAAAAAAAAyU/w4yfu2ijodE/s640/blogger-image-1930627124.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pGHXYMjBZgo/VHNBlzksTII/AAAAAAAAAyU/w4yfu2ijodE/s640/blogger-image-1930627124.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>After drilling, suck up the debris with a vacuum and brush dust off of the letters so that you have a clean surface. If necessary, you can lightly sand the area around the holes. I simply cleaned off the dust. My lights cover the edges of the holes.</div><div><br></div><div>Since there are chips around the edges of the holes, I re-painted the letters. Since I wanted to add some glitter, after painting each letter I sprinkled glitter on while the paint was still wet. I used ultra-fine diamond glitter. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jpVAqm2ABU8/VHNBnk1pGQI/AAAAAAAAAyk/-xtj4G9J1fk/s640/blogger-image-2068532315.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jpVAqm2ABU8/VHNBnk1pGQI/AAAAAAAAAyk/-xtj4G9J1fk/s640/blogger-image-2068532315.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>To thread the lights through, wait until everything is dry. If using the lights I used or similar lights, pull the plastic tops off (carefully so that you don't pull the whole light out like I did--that was a whole other nightmare). Starting at the top of one letter, push the light through the back, and PPP the plastic piece back on the front. I used a set of 60 even though I only needed 35 lights since some of the distances were longer than the light would allow. In those cases I just skipped a light and taped it down to the back of the board. Leave the plastic piece off. After you have finished filling each hole with a light, just tape the excess lights to the back of the board. I DID NOT put the gems back on them. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wFeIpjqnBXY/VHNBiB06v0I/AAAAAAAAAx0/L7oE42_caz0/s640/blogger-image-756946725.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-wFeIpjqnBXY/VHNBiB06v0I/AAAAAAAAAx0/L7oE42_caz0/s640/blogger-image-756946725.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fDi4SUhbWa4/VHNBmuiUh3I/AAAAAAAAAyc/TyP5dFmO7kg/s640/blogger-image--397308775.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fDi4SUhbWa4/VHNBmuiUh3I/AAAAAAAAAyc/TyP5dFmO7kg/s640/blogger-image--397308775.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>There are many battery operated lights available, which I recommend--but the original set I bought didn't have enough lights. I also recommend buying lights that stay on even if one bulb is pulled out. Mine did not, and I spent FOREVER trying to fix one bulb that I messed up when I accidentally yanked it out with my brute strength.</div><div><br></div><div>I then used glue to draw different snowflake designs using plain old white school glue. After you draw the design, cover it with glitter and let it dry.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1KdcsM7SnHU/VHNCgord70I/AAAAAAAAAys/OHJ88LsKQ9w/s640/blogger-image-1188135018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1KdcsM7SnHU/VHNCgord70I/AAAAAAAAAys/OHJ88LsKQ9w/s640/blogger-image-1188135018.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hBFr_WOcawo/VHNCht4Km_I/AAAAAAAAAy0/PqIPHrl3I78/s640/blogger-image--1506877957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hBFr_WOcawo/VHNCht4Km_I/AAAAAAAAAy0/PqIPHrl3I78/s640/blogger-image--1506877957.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-xlzc64yVpfw/VHNCiszkLJI/AAAAAAAAAy8/nl3KSQ0dvds/s640/blogger-image-1023755891.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-xlzc64yVpfw/VHNCiszkLJI/AAAAAAAAAy8/nl3KSQ0dvds/s640/blogger-image-1023755891.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Use screw-in eyes and wire to hang the marquee.</div></div></div>Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-73331404868487101112011-08-23T20:46:00.000-04:002011-08-23T20:46:14.196-04:00mosaic for audition<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So, I have been waiting about six months to audition for SYTYC. The below project is my failed attempt at making it in the top ten. I am upset, since it makes me feel like a failure, but OH WELL. I guess it's one less thing to worry about doing, and I tried. And I didn't do what some other people did...like bloggers with hundreds or thousands of followers that put their kids names, pictures, and even made a list with family members on it. So what if somebody made a tripod into a lamp? I made a DRUM into a lamp! I will live, move on, and maybe contact the other three LOSERS to join me in our own, different competition:)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HZUxo8D-pcA/TkLvYQsvIAI/AAAAAAAAAp8/MCjkXEnMwXQ/s1600/mosaic%2Bcollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HZUxo8D-pcA/TkLvYQsvIAI/AAAAAAAAAp8/MCjkXEnMwXQ/s320/mosaic%2Bcollage.jpg" width="318" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
So, I tried to create many different "audition pieces" for SYTYC. Not that they weren't good, but I just didn't feel they were good ENOUGH. So, I was reading Chica and Jo's post that had an invitation printed on a paint chip....and BOOM I had an epiphany. I love doing mosaic, but tiles are super expensive, grout is super messy, and I have done it with smashed plates but even those take up space to collect. So I decided to use paint chips. They are free, plentiful at your local Walmart or hardware store, and they are...FREE<br />
<br />
I started off by priming the laminate and then painting over it with a blue acrylic. Then I used a clean rag to wipe it off and give it a nice faux-finished ragged look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cRsF6R7A7XM/TkLzKbYqclI/AAAAAAAAAqA/b0Rt5AklxRM/s1600/collageformosaic2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="139" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cRsF6R7A7XM/TkLzKbYqclI/AAAAAAAAAqA/b0Rt5AklxRM/s320/collageformosaic2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Then I <strike>stole</strike> acquired a billion different paint chips, (by the way, walmart has GIANT paint chips) and using mod podge and a design I pulled out of my head....achieved this look. You can also gently sketch the design and fill it in as you go. Work in small areas at a time, and let the mod podge get a little tacky before you start filling in with the paint chips.<br />
<br />
To stay organized, I had cut the chips up and put them in a divided tackle box container by color, and this made working super fast and easy!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ShZySwaiEcw/TkL4BtGBuNI/AAAAAAAAAqE/rze2OO7ivT0/s1600/DSC_0340.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ShZySwaiEcw/TkL4BtGBuNI/AAAAAAAAAqE/rze2OO7ivT0/s320/DSC_0340.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

I figured, hey, why not? So, I worked out a design, since she likes the cupcakes and ice cream cones, I went with that...but added layer cakes since she is a cake designer.<br />
<br />
As usual I started off by measuring and cutting squares, then I used all of the scraps to create the applique and borders. Keep in mind, I used ONLY the materials given to me by Jen, with the exception of some fusible web and thread...and this is what we have come up with as a result. No more wondering how to keep your kids blankets or even their baby clothes that are hard to part with:<br />
<br />

Hope you like...and hope you decide that you can put those blankies to good use! Would be great to pass down for generations!<br />

And she made them even better!! She used left over receiving blanket fabric and added a self-binding border with mitered corners. I am so very honored that somebody used my very simple idea and made it so beautiful!<br />

I'm THRILLED they are waiting and it's going to be a surprise, but gift-giving in a gender-neutral fashion is definitely challenging!<br />
<br />
So, I started off by checking out their Babies R Us registry. Urm...green? ecru? Not really what I imagined they'd be going for.<br />
<br />
So I emailed both Jo and her sister, and the consensus was "bright, primary colors that could work for either a boy or girl."<br />
<br />
Ok, so what do I do with that one?? I immediately thought circus. I sketched some lions and some seals balancing balls on their noses. It just wasn't working for me. Then I thought...Chatham, MA? Sailboats?? OOH. So I sketched two different sailboats. Then I thought about how I can't do anything "normal." It needed more than sailboats...how about fish?? Then I remembered Mr. Octopus from Tyler's animal quilt. I adore seahorses, so I threw in one of those...and a jelly. I was thrilled with how it looked on paper, but I had no fabric. Or did I? I remembered my mother in law had given me some blue flannel and striped flannel. Plus I had a ton of scraps. So I measured and cut squares, then I used the navy blue remnant I had picked up last week. Then I started cutting out applique pieces, and voila!! I had a quilt top. I don't do anything in a forward fashion. I took pictures of the squares after I had a tentative layout, and went from there. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9efwotV6Gz4/Te6gbnGemrI/AAAAAAAAAo4/w399lXu3vSA/s1600/layout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9efwotV6Gz4/Te6gbnGemrI/AAAAAAAAAo4/w399lXu3vSA/s320/layout.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I had it all planned out, but then I got to Joann fabrics and the one in Walpole had NO good flannel!! Oh my, what do I do?? Then suddenly this interesting circle-pattern caught my eye, add some bright yellow, red and aqua and I had my selection.<br />
<br />
So final product was stunning, if I do say so myself. I was so happy with what I had come up with, and the parents-to-be seemed really happy with my soft, fuzzy, one-of-a-kind creation.<br />

It didn't. I followed all the rules and wouldn't tell ANYBODY which project to vote for. I guess I should've made the first thing I wanted to...a purse. Because that's what won. Also, I had a terrible time editing the photos. Oh well, so here is my project. I think it's very nice. Apparently it wasn't well liked in the voters' or judges' minds.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7sjwC2X5aCQ/TdGFsW5rseI/AAAAAAAAAks/fW4eeOzSVmQ/s1600/photo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7sjwC2X5aCQ/TdGFsW5rseI/AAAAAAAAAks/fW4eeOzSVmQ/s320/photo1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
So, I went to Joann Fabrics with 40% off coupon in hand...but I didn't need it. The toggles were on clearance for fifty cents each.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wfNSEgkkHQQ/TdGGu8hGmuI/AAAAAAAAAk0/gD1xzQ28vJ8/s1600/photo%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wfNSEgkkHQQ/TdGGu8hGmuI/AAAAAAAAAk0/gD1xzQ28vJ8/s320/photo%25281%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
Then, I made my own piping to have something to loop the toggle through. I used bias tape (on hand) and clothesline (courtesy of my mother in law earlier that day).<br />
<br />
I simply pinned the bias tape around the cord:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-23yTdgMN7_Q/TdGIhjUqBqI/AAAAAAAAAk8/Sr7E19I4gg0/s1600/photo%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-23yTdgMN7_Q/TdGIhjUqBqI/AAAAAAAAAk8/Sr7E19I4gg0/s320/photo%25282%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
Then I stitched as close to the cord as possible<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sruuX6PLdR4/TdGJT-ElprI/AAAAAAAAAlE/RRO300Bf0oQ/s1600/photo%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sruuX6PLdR4/TdGJT-ElprI/AAAAAAAAAlE/RRO300Bf0oQ/s320/photo%25283%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I sewed a loop of piping on back, then after three attempts finally attached the toggle. It's off kilter to begin with, so I couldn't get it straight...so Tony had to help me. I used a piece of seam binding to go through the holes, then sewed them onto the center of the front. Voila! Cute little pursey thing.<br />
<br />
And now for my quilt.<br />
<br />
I just want to mention that the flannel heart fabric and denim with hearts were hideous huge pieces my Nana gave my mom who said "take them" because she didn't like them...so I made a quilt for ME!!<br />
<br />
I started out by measuring and deciding that I could get the "most" out of the fabric by making 12.5" squares<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AZ_0iqg7JVA/TdGLe_fQIoI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/oQbc_4d8y_U/s1600/photo%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AZ_0iqg7JVA/TdGLe_fQIoI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/oQbc_4d8y_U/s320/photo%25285%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>And then I added my applique's and sewed the squares together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qGv7Lp5zw9g/TdGL5k3ec7I/AAAAAAAAAlU/cIKYucERe38/s1600/photo%25286%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qGv7Lp5zw9g/TdGL5k3ec7I/AAAAAAAAAlU/cIKYucERe38/s320/photo%25286%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
Note I added double-scoop ice cream cones, and since the quilt is for me (and not a baby) button "cherries" on the cupcakes.<br />
<br />
I had initially thought I would have enough flannel or denim for the border...but I didn't. Then I remembered the big bag of fabric my friend Karen had brought me. I had remembered seeing a large white piece in there...but when I pulled it out it was actually the bottom of a couch slipcover. So, I adapted. I ripped out the corner seams<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lbbC0hcm_bg/TdGMi855UQI/AAAAAAAAAlY/-dWSwaafLjw/s1600/photo%25287%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lbbC0hcm_bg/TdGMi855UQI/AAAAAAAAAlY/-dWSwaafLjw/s320/photo%25287%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a8Zjk5YsT2o/TdGMzAh7_CI/AAAAAAAAAlc/2khlYVTD70s/s1600/photo%25288%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a8Zjk5YsT2o/TdGMzAh7_CI/AAAAAAAAAlc/2khlYVTD70s/s320/photo%25288%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I cut it into 8" strips and ended up with two pieces that were perfect for the sides at 60". Then I found that two were perfect for the top, after the sides are added. So I sewed on the sides first, then added the top.<br />
<br />
Here is the quilt before washing (un-frayed)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eW-JqcKt8iE/TdGNXj7ZFeI/AAAAAAAAAlg/yeMOWt39YjM/s1600/photo%25289%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eW-JqcKt8iE/TdGNXj7ZFeI/AAAAAAAAAlg/yeMOWt39YjM/s320/photo%25289%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
Then I clipped and washed it...here are some pics including close-ups of the squares:<br />

And as you probably know by now, I FINALLY WON! Now the bug has bitten, if I won once--I can win again, right? Well, we shall see. I have been trying to win. I won the silhouette sd through www.familylicious.com. It is GREAT. You should really check it out. If you follow them on facebook they post on their wall every time a new giveaway comes up. They are currently running a two-day giveaway for Aveeno products. I love Aveeno. We all have eczema, and it is a great product. I would love to win this because my son has been having eczema flare-ups, and I am running low on lotion products for myself! You can enter to win here: <br />

And three rag quilts:)<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Well, first off and most importantly, I WON!! What did I win? I won a Silhouette SD. It is the tool I have wanted for so very very long!!! I am so excited, ecstatic, and beyond words. I entered to win on about 6 different blogs. My favorite part of the entry process was finding some amazing blogs. I won at "Familylicious Reviews and Giveaways." You can see that I won here: http://familylicious.com/winners-5/<br />
<br />
Seriously, check out familylicious.com there are constant giveaways!<br />
<br />
How I found out:<br />
<br />
My husband emailed me at work: "Shannon-I think you won the silhouette thingy"<br />
<br />
Next Email: "I really think you won!"<br />
<br />
Next Email: "CALL ME"<br />
<br />
So, I called him, and it was true, I REALLY WON!! <br />
<br />
So, my craft mojo is back. I had lost it for a bit, hence my absence from the blogosphere, but now it is back in full force! Thank you Debra, from familylicious. You have pulled me out of my funk. Thank you Silhouette for this amazing gift.<br />
<br />
I should receive it in 4-6 weeks. It is the rhinestone bundle, so I think my nieces will be sparkly very soon, since I don't think my sons will appreciate the glitteryness:)<br />
<br />
So, here's what I have made, and this is my own creation, no pattern, made almost entirely from scratch. Also, please note: this is without a silhouette.<br />
<br />
First, I was in NY at my mom's and she had a bunch of leftover squares from various rag quilts. So, I decided to make a rag quilt, but I wanted to incorporate applique. So, this is not only my first rag quilt, but also my first real applique experience.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SuPi5gJZqFA/TcssXp7mjCI/AAAAAAAAAh4/4QzK8qh-ZSo/s1600/photo%252812%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SuPi5gJZqFA/TcssXp7mjCI/AAAAAAAAAh4/4QzK8qh-ZSo/s320/photo%252812%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
So I started with a couple of owl squares, and this was my original plan. After rearranging a zillion times I resignedly decided I needed to make more applique squares. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YQCPv9hTlZE/TcssuGGNG8I/AAAAAAAAAiA/Kz-S_UoSZZs/s1600/photo%25281%2529.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YQCPv9hTlZE/TcssuGGNG8I/AAAAAAAAAiA/Kz-S_UoSZZs/s320/photo%25281%2529.PNG" width="238" /></a></div><br />
So after a lot of rearranging random pieces that is what I came up with. Owls, snake, snail, octopus with a mere four arms, umm...oh a whale and a turtle.<br />
<br />
So, I don't have any pics after washing, but here is the front and back before clipping:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PwS6B0GXoeQ/TcstILAl2NI/AAAAAAAAAiI/p9x0wEHCuEI/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PwS6B0GXoeQ/TcstILAl2NI/AAAAAAAAAiI/p9x0wEHCuEI/s320/photo.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>oopsie, forgot about the monkey:)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c9ph3WN5wq0/TcstYy506cI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/ADTBn8-Bpk8/s1600/photo.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c9ph3WN5wq0/TcstYy506cI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/ADTBn8-Bpk8/s320/photo.PNG" width="238" /></a></div>And after clipping:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i3hM8DOU5AA/Tcstt_OhRvI/AAAAAAAAAiU/egvrnV6fJoc/s1600/photo%25281%2529.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i3hM8DOU5AA/Tcstt_OhRvI/AAAAAAAAAiU/egvrnV6fJoc/s320/photo%25281%2529.PNG" width="238" /></a></div><br />
So, then I wanted to make one for my cousin's baby. This one is a girl! So, I wanted to do cupcakes, but then I had an epic idea...ice cream cones!! So, I had this huge piece of pink flannel my Nana had given me in her big de-stashing. I brought a little piece of that to Joann fabrics and decided on some pink and green prints, and bought 1/3 of a yard of each for only $2.99 a yard! So, this quilt cost about $5 (and six hours) to make:)<br />
<br />
First I measured the fabric and settled on 11 inch squares, since that was the biggest I could get out of what I had purchased, and I laid it out (can you tell I make quilts backwards--plan after I cut:) ?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C2Ec7DZIEOE/TcsuZD0YHYI/AAAAAAAAAiY/JuUaREPyiX0/s1600/photo+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C2Ec7DZIEOE/TcsuZD0YHYI/AAAAAAAAAiY/JuUaREPyiX0/s320/photo+%25282%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
Then on a piece of paper, I drew the tops of ice cream and cupcakes, and the cones and cupcake holders.<br />
<br />
Then I cut out a bunch of them, and tried different color combos until I settled on this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-29kIbJAnW5I/Tcsu2caVriI/AAAAAAAAAic/cJ6jgn7yC9E/s1600/photo%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-29kIbJAnW5I/Tcsu2caVriI/AAAAAAAAAic/cJ6jgn7yC9E/s320/photo%25281%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
<br />
</div>So, using fusible interfacing I ironed them into place, and then stitched around the edges, leaving a raw edge for fraying. I cut 9 pink 11" squares for the back (the back is all pink), I sewed it all together, and for the border I cut 8" strips of pink to make a 4" border.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TtV2hIYIHnk/TcsvFIAmk8I/AAAAAAAAAig/hvb7mqSCppk/s1600/photo%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TtV2hIYIHnk/TcsvFIAmk8I/AAAAAAAAAig/hvb7mqSCppk/s320/photo%25283%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
I LOVE it. <br />
<br />
Then I wanted to make one for my friend's newborn baby (born Monday) so I decided to do ice cream and popsicles, and I cut out his name and put it in the center:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--EW7oEGSeF4/TcsvkslcOtI/AAAAAAAAAik/e9qD0cnYgJA/s1600/photo%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--EW7oEGSeF4/TcsvkslcOtI/AAAAAAAAAik/e9qD0cnYgJA/s320/photo%25285%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LEfdJ_N-ESM/TcsvnBbMp2I/AAAAAAAAAio/keZK4_rXN-g/s1600/photo%25287%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LEfdJ_N-ESM/TcsvnBbMp2I/AAAAAAAAAio/keZK4_rXN-g/s320/photo%25287%2529.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><br />
So, what do you think of my first three rag quilts??<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

I had no real plan, all I knew was that it was going to be for a friend.<br />
Originally, it was just going to be the two owls...then I added a snake and a snail.<br />
They seemed lonely, so I added a whale.<br />
The whale needed another ocean friend, so mr. Octavio joined him. Then came the turtle and the tree...I think that's it. So I will update with some more details of how I made my very first rag quilt with applique. Hope to finish Friday, tomorrows my ten year anniversary, so new sewing.<br />
<br />
I simply drew the shapes on some flannel, cut them out and used double-sided interfacing to attach them to the backgrounds. I used machine and hand-stitching to permanently attach them.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-s5TeAgBhd_w/TbBm6sSvOZI/AAAAAAAAAhw/k8rxThap9DU/s1600/205603_215982151746136_100000030580932_903276_7722180_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="238" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-s5TeAgBhd_w/TbBm6sSvOZI/AAAAAAAAAhw/k8rxThap9DU/s320/205603_215982151746136_100000030580932_903276_7722180_n.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Won't it be so cute once it is all together!!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-18181531787113413392011-04-04T20:10:00.000-04:002011-04-04T20:10:36.111-04:00In Memory Of...and a failed lampshade<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a9_RrPGMq6g/TZpbXdAIMBI/AAAAAAAAAf4/23bkEMwWF6M/s1600/DSC_0569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a9_RrPGMq6g/TZpbXdAIMBI/AAAAAAAAAf4/23bkEMwWF6M/s320/DSC_0569.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
So, I usually try to blog at least on Sundays...but then I ate baklava. Why is this a problem? Because three years ago this May I contracted flesh-eating strep. I know, weird. Apparently after receiving numerous human immunoglobulin transfusions...I received other people's immune systems. Hence, bizarre allergies I had never had before, like nuts. So, forgetting to think about the contents of the delicious Greek pastry, I delved in. Then the reaction started. I am FINALLY after 24 hours back to "normal." But that's why there was not a smidge of blogging or crafting. Even this one is mediocre at best.<br />
<br />
However, I can deal with the food allergies, since I still have my leg, and my life. A huge percentage of people who get FES either end up amputees, or dead. I am LUCKY. Thanks to the transfusions, the fact that I am NOT allergic to penicillin, and the horrible contraption called the hyperbaric chamber (aka clear coffin).<br />
<br />
Hmmm....Ironically this post is actually about somebody who died. My father-in-law's 37 year old girlfriend (don't do the math...I know, I know) DeeDee tragically died in February. She left behind two young children and a dog, which thankfully I got rid of yesterday.<br />
<br />
Wait, I meant the dog!!<br />
<br />
The kids are with family.<br />
<br />
Anyways, when we left the funeral, we had a basket arrangement. I have been plucking flowers out and drying them, and I promised my father-in-law a keepsake of sorts, so here it is.<br />
<br />
First, I let the flowers hang-dry.<br />
<br />
Then I snipped them off and alternatingly glued them across from each other.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HOSveAXx0ZE/TZpa51HL_tI/AAAAAAAAAfg/8DiuEgetN2M/s1600/DSC_0564.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HOSveAXx0ZE/TZpa51HL_tI/AAAAAAAAAfg/8DiuEgetN2M/s320/DSC_0564.JPG" /></a></div><br />
I kept going until I ran out of roses...it's not PERFECT, but it's for a guy...a guy who is definitely not a perfectionist, so it works<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bpPAAABPYlI/TZpbIgmy3PI/AAAAAAAAAfo/RguYi8uASuE/s1600/DSC_0566.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bpPAAABPYlI/TZpbIgmy3PI/AAAAAAAAAfo/RguYi8uASuE/s320/DSC_0566.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hoy8yf5JfSs/TZpbPmKlolI/AAAAAAAAAfw/V-AkDWJa8Xg/s1600/DSC_0568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hoy8yf5JfSs/TZpbPmKlolI/AAAAAAAAAfw/V-AkDWJa8Xg/s320/DSC_0568.JPG" /></a></div><br />
So, that's that one. Then there is the lampshade. So, my friend Jen sent me a link with one made out of film negatives, that I LOVE and I am going to make. But I wanted to try this one, found here:<br />
<br />
http://thepleatedpoppy.com/2011/02/scrappy-lampshade-tutorial-and-long-story/<br />
<br />
But, I STILL don't like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ckHms1OQlxA/TZpdBqfSpAI/AAAAAAAAAgA/HAVTBhTIjJU/s1600/DSC_0561.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ckHms1OQlxA/TZpdBqfSpAI/AAAAAAAAAgA/HAVTBhTIjJU/s320/DSC_0561.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Please disregard the disaster that is my craft corner in the background...didn't feel up to cropping!<br />
<br />
So, back to the drawing board on that, must make a negative one, I just haven't had time. And I REALLY want to be on One Month to Win it...but probably won't make it this time with THAT lampshade. The one on pleated poppy was much cuter.<br />
<br />
Oh, and one more thing...make sure you check out www.spoonflower.com YOU can design your own fabric there!! How awesome is that? I mean, really really really cool. I gave it a shot, and I intend on continuing practicing...I am determined!! Here is what I made from a photo the other day:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/546162">My fabric link</a><br />
<br />
Good Night. Back to work tomorrow, hopefully HEALTHY!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-46867019213137312042011-03-27T18:15:00.001-04:002011-04-14T19:44:04.473-04:00Drum...Lamp...Drumlamp?So, a trash to treasure miracle:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WHcNYcCL6F4/TY-xPtVwRZI/AAAAAAAAAb4/uh2pEfkCxyI/s1600/DSC_0549.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WHcNYcCL6F4/TY-xPtVwRZI/AAAAAAAAAb4/uh2pEfkCxyI/s320/DSC_0549.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
So, my husband had purchased this kid's drum kit for $60 on craigslist.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FyrLlIP93nA/TY-wpKy-srI/AAAAAAAAAbw/CqDcnZc-cUE/s1600/drumkit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FyrLlIP93nA/TY-wpKy-srI/AAAAAAAAAbw/CqDcnZc-cUE/s320/drumkit.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Then he refinished them, using a technique he found on instructables.com. Then we had a house fire...and the drums SEEMED ok, but apparently all of the smoke and water damaged them. HE says they don't sound the same. His friend Bill concurs. I think they sound like drums...but apparently they were warped and now sound "out of tune."<br />
<br />
So, as he is replacing his Toms, I said "WAIT! Can I have them? Do you think we could make one into a lamp?"<br />
<br />
So, last night, we decided to get going on the project!!<br />
<br />
First Step: Either buy a lamp kit, you can buy them at Walmart, some craft stores, or a hardware store. Or, in our case we had inherited two very ugly lamps. So, we pulled the lamp kit out of the urn that looks like a dead body should forever rest in it...and reused that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9AUZTvKWYHY/TY-xyDUa-pI/AAAAAAAAAcA/mBDBFTuvpj8/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9AUZTvKWYHY/TY-xyDUa-pI/AAAAAAAAAcA/mBDBFTuvpj8/s320/photo.JPG" /></a></div><br />
I know, hideous right? It was FREE with the purchase of the bed and end tables my father in law recently bought. At an antiques warehouse/co-op you would all salivate over...He couldn't even keep this lamp or the other, equally hideous lamp in his room because they took up the whole end table!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RjsHUS0LUBg/TY-yNwJwcII/AAAAAAAAAcI/aOEdgG8-bpw/s1600/photo%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RjsHUS0LUBg/TY-yNwJwcII/AAAAAAAAAcI/aOEdgG8-bpw/s320/photo%25282%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
I apologize now for the poor quality for the photos. OF COURSE my Nikon battery was dead. Did my hubby tell me to charge it that morning? Yes. Did I? Of course not. I can't remember anything! So, iPhone it is!<br />
<br />
Step Two: We set the lamp base aside, since we are going to upcycle that into something fun too(stay tuned)...waste not want not! Then we fed the lamp mechanism into an existing hole in the drum. Drum shells are full of holes, but you could always drill one if need be.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Cri5oFwkxe0/TY-ypWU-WuI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/L-EQ11xvzW4/s1600/photo%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="239" width="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Cri5oFwkxe0/TY-ypWU-WuI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/L-EQ11xvzW4/s320/photo%25283%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Step Three: Then my husband cut the threaded stem off of the pipe with my Dremel-knockoff tool (got it at Big Lots for $25 with all the attachments...if you don't have one check out Big Lots because it is AMAZING!) I was afraid of the sparks. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kDh-RxeAip0/TY-zbrReeWI/AAAAAAAAAcY/Nw75A0uJQz0/s1600/photo%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="239" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kDh-RxeAip0/TY-zbrReeWI/AAAAAAAAAcY/Nw75A0uJQz0/s320/photo%25284%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Pretty sparks...<br />
<br />
Step Four: Here's the tricky part. We have a box of random screws and hardware in our house, and we just kept trying different configurations. We actually found a random metal tubey-thingie (real technical talk here) and used that. It fit in the drum hole perfectly...but you could use a piece of pvc, or a piece of pipe maybe? Then we screwed everything together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cJb9ctzvjDk/TY-0V3IUQbI/AAAAAAAAAcg/JUrAoQn0a4c/s1600/photo%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cJb9ctzvjDk/TY-0V3IUQbI/AAAAAAAAAcg/JUrAoQn0a4c/s320/photo%25285%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oURhQRUPfUs/TY-0ZoaM-3I/AAAAAAAAAco/LTXybsw6zVw/s1600/photo%25286%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="239" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oURhQRUPfUs/TY-0ZoaM-3I/AAAAAAAAAco/LTXybsw6zVw/s320/photo%25286%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
Step Five: We had to glue the lamp mechanism in place, so it wouldn't topple over. We tried to use E6000 glue, but had to use hot glue as it wasn't holding and we are impatient. I used it like caulk to stabilize it.<br />
Here is the inside of the drum, see the metal circle we used to hold everything together:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wLCGvpWJvlk/TY-0yc7kUPI/AAAAAAAAAcw/PwYqFRavYC4/s1600/photo%25287%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wLCGvpWJvlk/TY-0yc7kUPI/AAAAAAAAAcw/PwYqFRavYC4/s320/photo%25287%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
So far it should look like this (taken with Nikon since battery has partially charged;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ENkWBEWIa4I/TY-1xecKraI/AAAAAAAAAc4/dc1b9SXtNLQ/s1600/DSC_0534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ENkWBEWIa4I/TY-1xecKraI/AAAAAAAAAc4/dc1b9SXtNLQ/s320/DSC_0534.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Step Six: Actually, in terms of the lamp it is pretty much done. If you had to cut the cord off, then reattach it with electrical tape and plug it in. However, then we moved on to the shade debacle. It is not pictured in the final product, because it is not done yet. Here's where I need help: Ideas?? How do I finish this?<br />
<br />
6a: We drilled the bottom of six drumsticks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ypvzZC-P06I/TY-15wogJOI/AAAAAAAAAdA/fzXysyqX-fQ/s1600/photo%25288%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ypvzZC-P06I/TY-15wogJOI/AAAAAAAAAdA/fzXysyqX-fQ/s320/photo%25288%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br />
6b: Then screwed them into a spare drum rim:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N8imIrSGjKY/TY-2FNMZsHI/AAAAAAAAAdI/XysGUStN2Gw/s1600/DSC_0531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N8imIrSGjKY/TY-2FNMZsHI/AAAAAAAAAdI/XysGUStN2Gw/s320/DSC_0531.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
6c: Then wired them across the old lampshade top ring, also used a little help from our friend the hot glue gun...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b4EEsbn_1zg/TY-2bWp_lpI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/jtEiZu4bWLA/s1600/DSC_0533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b4EEsbn_1zg/TY-2bWp_lpI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/jtEiZu4bWLA/s320/DSC_0533.JPG" /></a></div><br />
6d: Then I TRIED to cut the old lampshade apart and make a new lampshade out of a hard rock cafe shirt...didn't work out...so In order to finish I need ideas. I was thinking of some sort of weaving? Not sure if it will work. HELP ME.<br />
So for now:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iPmzq4sANPE/TY-23G5GzFI/AAAAAAAAAdY/0ebtpbi3QJU/s1600/DSC_0549.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iPmzq4sANPE/TY-23G5GzFI/AAAAAAAAAdY/0ebtpbi3QJU/s320/DSC_0549.JPG" /></a></div><br />
However, the "face" of this project will probably change, since Tony wants to make the drum head into a clock...so then it will be a "clocklampdrum"<br />
<br />
Enjoy:)<br />
<br />
I did put this in audition for one month to win it...maybe if I get in the competition I will get back on the crafting wagon (in all fairness, first I was sick, then GRADES WERE DUE!!)<br />
<br />
<br/><a href="http://onemonthtowinit.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> <img border="0" alt="One Month To Win It" src="http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh243/kalleenk/mtwibutton2_2-001-1.jpg"/></a><br/><br/>Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-51028637841513376462011-03-26T11:01:00.000-04:002011-03-26T11:01:23.681-04:00A few of my favorite things...<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Well, I didn't get chosen for "One Month to Win it." I am actually semi-relieved, since after I auditioned I thought, "and when am I going to have time to do this?" However, I would've found time, and I will try again in April. Besides, who can compete with the Tree Bookshelves made by "Girl in Air?"....I mean, really. Check them out and you will see why I didn't make it! Besides, I am a newbie at this whole thing, and Girl in Air won American Crafter! I'm planning on putting one of these up in my house, but I want to find a halved railiroad tie or something to make a rounded trunk...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="188" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bdwBTlnLfaM/TY37hWT1PTI/AAAAAAAAAbQ/JXt6EiIGAjA/s320/IMG_1435.jpg" width="190" /></div><br />
I need a good idea, for my next two auditions...since in September I have the chance to be a hopeful on "So You think You're Crafty." That, I have better odds at...there will only be 15 of us, rather than 99. </div><br />
Go to www.soyouthinkyourecrafty.com to check out the current competition. Season 7 starts Monday, I'm on for Season 9...sigh...long ways away!<br />
<br />
I need an amazing audition piece for that...still brainstorming.<br />
<br />
Some of the other cool things I have found on the blogosphere lately:<br />
<br />
Christina @ <a href="http://thetatteredtag.blogspot.com">The Tattered Tag</a><br />
<br />
She was my first follower....and makes amazing country-style gifts. I mean, things you would pay top dollar for at that stupid country store in the mall...but her stuff is NOT made in China!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8LP2JD0Kd58/TY39ZTiT1RI/AAAAAAAAAbY/IvVnDnuH8BM/s1600/100_2860.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="280" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8LP2JD0Kd58/TY39ZTiT1RI/AAAAAAAAAbY/IvVnDnuH8BM/s320/100_2860.jpg" /></a></div><br />
The next project I want to embark on is making curtains for my bathroom. I saw these, made by <a href="http://corduroyscloset.blogspot.com">Corduroy's Closet</a><br />
AND HAVE TO MAKE THEM!! I am going with a bathroom theme, so they will be a bit different. Can you believe she got voted off of So You Think You're Crafty? I can't, because if she had a chance to submit these...she might have won that week!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AUhRpfGSTVA/TY3-ecGiCxI/AAAAAAAAAbg/C_LNGxVFWuY/s1600/DSC_0740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="305" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AUhRpfGSTVA/TY3-ecGiCxI/AAAAAAAAAbg/C_LNGxVFWuY/s320/DSC_0740.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Amazing, right?<br />
<br />
Personally, I am in a crafting funk. An all-around funk. I am not sure why, but think that I need to get moving on a project to make me feel better!! <br />
<br />
Another project idea I have, was inspired by a plethora of sources....but www.bystephanielynn.com is one of my favorite places for inspiration. Her photography is beautiful. Her projects are impeccable. Here is a wreath made from BOOKS! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rSz-pDskaMA/TY3_dTX-MeI/AAAAAAAAAbo/2ERDMvKWm0k/s1600/100_4866.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="231" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rSz-pDskaMA/TY3_dTX-MeI/AAAAAAAAAbo/2ERDMvKWm0k/s320/100_4866.jpg" /></a></div><br />
So, while I sit here and ponder how much housework I have...I actually must get moving on that!! As soon as I get my own tutorial up, I will let y'all know...but for now MUST CLEAN HOUSEShannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-26540620688169469602011-03-20T19:14:00.003-04:002011-03-20T22:39:42.481-04:00New spin on an old wine bottleOk, so I saw these "green lanterns" at a craft fair and I have been DYING to make one since. They are awesome, and they are beautiful, and if you have the supplies...they are free.<br />
<br />
Before my ADD kicks in...here is what I made:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kYV78Qu1Io/TYaKNwCaNTI/AAAAAAAAAYc/Zcmh0mFHUEI/s1600/DSC_0556.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kYV78Qu1Io/TYaKNwCaNTI/AAAAAAAAAYc/Zcmh0mFHUEI/s320/DSC_0556.JPG" /></a></div><br /> <a border="0" href="http://www.sistersofthewildwest.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k32/vacationamy/SisterSunday2.png"/></a><br /> <br />
<br />
<br />
So I had been researching how to cut the bottles, since that is obviously the most difficult part. There were so many different conflicting tips, and then I saw....<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tn3x1HKHhfM/TYaGHabVO-I/AAAAAAAAAWs/O1PJCoYk-bs/s1600/DSC_0533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="214" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tn3x1HKHhfM/TYaGHabVO-I/AAAAAAAAAWs/O1PJCoYk-bs/s320/DSC_0533.JPG" /></a></div><br />
At AC Moore. Price tag: $34.99. Being frugal (ahem, broke) I decided to wait until I got another fifty percent off coupon. Then I got one on Friday that was good for today ONLY. So I went in today, grabbed the box, and headed for the counter. I hand the girl the coupon. She says, "You can't use this." I say, "WHY?" She says, "It's on clearance, that will be $5.31." WOOOHHOOO<br />
<br />
Then I think...it must not work that well if they are giving them away.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5tTQ-mf6n-s/TYaGy8HDP_I/AAAAAAAAAW0/Fz6MY4NcQnM/s1600/DSC_0531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="214" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5tTQ-mf6n-s/TYaGy8HDP_I/AAAAAAAAAW0/Fz6MY4NcQnM/s320/DSC_0531.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Yes, pieces. I get frustrated, so I head to my husband. HE says..."Where are the screws?"<br />
<br />
What screws? Oh, the screws I dropped in the bag in the car without a second glance because I was so excited to see what was in the box.<br />
OOPSIE!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B0qR6BWVfvw/TYaHWL65geI/AAAAAAAAAW8/GvFBxFqzCHo/s1600/DSC_0537.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B0qR6BWVfvw/TYaHWL65geI/AAAAAAAAAW8/GvFBxFqzCHo/s320/DSC_0537.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x5ahxv4KvP4/TYaHZ4BeitI/AAAAAAAAAXE/V8TsOEy01PU/s1600/DSC_0538.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x5ahxv4KvP4/TYaHZ4BeitI/AAAAAAAAAXE/V8TsOEy01PU/s320/DSC_0538.JPG" /></a></div><br />
SO, after we tried it on three beer bottles, I decided to try it on a wine bottle. Did I mention that the beer bottle cutting was unsuccessful? Ok, so I had to modify the directions in order to make sure it worked. I drew inspiration from other people that I had read previous to seeing this device.<br />
<br />
First step: Use either a glass scoring wheel or this lovely device to score the bottle. Note: this device at least gives you a straight, consistent line. I tried the regular glass wheel before (they are only three dollars) and I was all over the place. I, for the record, had not had the wine from the bottle prior to cutting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-612s_ZE3LrM/TYaH6RMHYNI/AAAAAAAAAXM/gscWsFATtU8/s1600/DSC_0539.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="214" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-612s_ZE3LrM/TYaH6RMHYNI/AAAAAAAAAXM/gscWsFATtU8/s320/DSC_0539.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Second Step: After scoring, set up a deep enough bucket of ice water. Then, heat the scored line over a candle until it is hot. Dunk it in the ice water. If you don't hear a cracking noise, dry the bottle off and heat it up again. Repeat the dunking. It should crack away.<br />
<br />
This is not mentioned in the directions with the kit...they give you a "tapping rod" which gave me the urge to smash the bottle off of the front steps...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SF6NIbK8d7E/TYaIVpve2zI/AAAAAAAAAXU/X-tvhodg0B4/s1600/DSC_0540.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SF6NIbK8d7E/TYaIVpve2zI/AAAAAAAAAXU/X-tvhodg0B4/s320/DSC_0540.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Third Step:<br />
Sand the edges. I opted to not cut the bottom off, because I was afraid the project would become shards...as had my previous attempts with the beer bottles. I used my rotary tool to sand, and also used 100 grit sandpaper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QrgWXFxm8pM/TYaIlqrYwrI/AAAAAAAAAXc/l81bhHujl6g/s1600/DSC_0544.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QrgWXFxm8pM/TYaIlqrYwrI/AAAAAAAAAXc/l81bhHujl6g/s320/DSC_0544.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DTQaXmm8v7g/TYaIqCrRqHI/AAAAAAAAAXk/JOlP2GHot4w/s1600/DSC_0546.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DTQaXmm8v7g/TYaIqCrRqHI/AAAAAAAAAXk/JOlP2GHot4w/s320/DSC_0546.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nCuYa6hyp_I/TYaIumtvcCI/AAAAAAAAAXs/-tj0l0Og9lM/s1600/DSC_0547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nCuYa6hyp_I/TYaIumtvcCI/AAAAAAAAAXs/-tj0l0Og9lM/s320/DSC_0547.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Fifth step: You can paint, decoupage or...of course...I choose the more difficult, never done by me before option. I etch. I choose a stencil that is supposed to be used with the sand blasting glass etching kit at AC MOORE (very BIG pricetag) and decide to try my hand at using the rotary tool. So I put (I mean my husband put) the grinding stone attachment on. I duck taped (pretty purple) on the stencil. NOTE: Your stencil will never be the same...so don't use one you ever want to see again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t_CCz_g6i90/TYaJRsg_mNI/AAAAAAAAAX0/tLSZ2rq45zQ/s1600/DSC_0548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t_CCz_g6i90/TYaJRsg_mNI/AAAAAAAAAX0/tLSZ2rq45zQ/s320/DSC_0548.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Sixth Step: I had at it with the grinding stone. I tried to avoid blowing out the plastic, and just "wung it." Overall, I think it looks rather nice. However, look at the poor stencil. RIP sunflower stencil I bought for 10 cents...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TfVtIHCDX6s/TYaJkGv57fI/AAAAAAAAAX8/y9CPzagPRzI/s1600/DSC_0550.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TfVtIHCDX6s/TYaJkGv57fI/AAAAAAAAAX8/y9CPzagPRzI/s320/DSC_0550.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Seventh Step: Wait, you are done!! Just add a candle and enjoy!! I'm warning you...bottle cutter is currently my enemy and I would've returned it if it had been more than $5. I know, like everything, I will get better at this. I am pretty happy with my first shot!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uv5mf6CxibE/TYaJ2OazSLI/AAAAAAAAAYE/65fQKENufqM/s1600/DSC_0551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uv5mf6CxibE/TYaJ2OazSLI/AAAAAAAAAYE/65fQKENufqM/s320/DSC_0551.JPG" /></a></div><br />

I was bored a few days ago, and feeling crafty. I decided to make myself a little necklace/choker deal!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mtTaG5CeIlg/TYKK8WP3U4I/AAAAAAAAAUk/nEFbfj7eDAY/s1600/mail-11.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="221" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mtTaG5CeIlg/TYKK8WP3U4I/AAAAAAAAAUk/nEFbfj7eDAY/s320/mail-11.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
First step: Choose your fabric, and cut a two inch wide strip. I made my strip about a yard long, but you can definitely make it as long or short as you'd like...just make sure you can tie it around your neck!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vspb7thrTag/TYKLK1Tat_I/AAAAAAAAAUs/JJvaMc6jaI8/s1600/mail.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="124" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vspb7thrTag/TYKLK1Tat_I/AAAAAAAAAUs/JJvaMc6jaI8/s320/mail.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Two: Cut three inch squares from the fabric. I cut more than enough, but used only four.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dO1f_9QuaRo/TYKLXBNwcpI/AAAAAAAAAU0/NNh-o4oHT14/s1600/mail-2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="222" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dO1f_9QuaRo/TYKLXBNwcpI/AAAAAAAAAU0/NNh-o4oHT14/s320/mail-2.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Three: Sew your strip of fabric together, right sides together. Also sew across one end, so you can easily turn it right-side out. After you turn it out, it will look like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g0LO4m9F3CE/TYKLq65IH2I/AAAAAAAAAU8/CQRUabAXi_U/s1600/mail-3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="222" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g0LO4m9F3CE/TYKLq65IH2I/AAAAAAAAAU8/CQRUabAXi_U/s320/mail-3.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Four:<br />
Cut the squares into circle shapes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gt1T9Ds-deQ/TYKL5YlqIaI/AAAAAAAAAVE/4nYT3ZD2Wnw/s1600/mail-5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="124" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gt1T9Ds-deQ/TYKL5YlqIaI/AAAAAAAAAVE/4nYT3ZD2Wnw/s320/mail-5.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Five:<br />
Slit the sides of the circle to make petals, just like I have shown you before:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UU7TzCPW3Ps/TYKMCjDNCmI/AAAAAAAAAVM/QvtDMjKZmNI/s1600/mail-6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="124" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UU7TzCPW3Ps/TYKMCjDNCmI/AAAAAAAAAVM/QvtDMjKZmNI/s320/mail-6.jpeg" /></a></div>I did six petals on the bottom three, four on the top.<br />
<br />
Step Six: Stack and stagger the circles, and sew them together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HXD7sOxBYUI/TYKMOMk418I/AAAAAAAAAVU/z04R0112U_w/s1600/mail-7.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="124" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HXD7sOxBYUI/TYKMOMk418I/AAAAAAAAAVU/z04R0112U_w/s320/mail-7.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Seven: Fold in half and stitch again to give some dimension.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NUmvteynE28/TYKMbrWfifI/AAAAAAAAAVc/9C_J14jC-sQ/s1600/mail-8.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="124" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NUmvteynE28/TYKMbrWfifI/AAAAAAAAAVc/9C_J14jC-sQ/s320/mail-8.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Eight: Make sure your petals are shaped, and sew the flower to the "ribbon" you made. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XO3ixo1a2i8/TYKMtIs_m7I/AAAAAAAAAVk/yeCpONs1wgo/s1600/mail-9.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="124" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XO3ixo1a2i8/TYKMtIs_m7I/AAAAAAAAAVk/yeCpONs1wgo/s320/mail-9.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
Step Nine: Add a button center, and tie it on. Voila! Would be great to make for bridesmaids out of leftover hem fabric! Would also make a neat wristlet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ll1_ciT0KZE/TYKNE_FBOqI/AAAAAAAAAVs/Lc0-bY8n1ks/s1600/mail-10.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="222" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ll1_ciT0KZE/TYKNE_FBOqI/AAAAAAAAAVs/Lc0-bY8n1ks/s320/mail-10.jpeg" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cxphWL6I8T4/TYKNIdiqzlI/AAAAAAAAAV0/Fit-CpFIPN0/s1600/mail-11.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="166" width="221" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cxphWL6I8T4/TYKNIdiqzlI/AAAAAAAAAV0/Fit-CpFIPN0/s320/mail-11.jpeg" /></a></div>Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-20152480969166304972011-03-14T19:09:00.001-04:002011-03-20T19:16:08.558-04:00Decorative Photo TilesWell, if you go to CVS, Winkflash, Snapfish, etc, you can have your child's face put on a coaster or a photo tile. Why waste your money when you can make your own? The only things you need are easily found in a crafty home for free, except maybe the tiles. However, I found them in my home or you could ask friends or try freecycle.org.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iY9Flw_p3P8/TX6ewAb1sII/AAAAAAAAATk/5EQ3rozWHkI/s1600/DSC_0477.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iY9Flw_p3P8/TX6ewAb1sII/AAAAAAAAATk/5EQ3rozWHkI/s320/DSC_0477.JPG" /></a></div><br />
So, you will need the following:<br />
<br />
REAL photographs. They can't be printed off of your computer...sorry<br />
<br />
Aleene's tacky glue<br />
<br />
Mod Podge<br />
<br />
Ceramic Tiles (you can also use wood and other surfaces as your background)<br />
<br />
Paintbrushes<br />
<br />
Step One: Glue the photos on the tile using a hearty coating of tacky glue. Let it dry for awhile, at least 4 hours. Apply weight if necessary.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MxCFTg17PAg/TX6fLr0lTmI/AAAAAAAAATs/2L03Ux-ImtY/s1600/DSC_0438.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MxCFTg17PAg/TX6fLr0lTmI/AAAAAAAAATs/2L03Ux-ImtY/s320/DSC_0438.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Step Two: After glue has dried, apply a coat of mod podge. Allow this to dry completely (once again, we are talking hours). This is what I call an "in between" project. I work on it for a minute, and while it's drying I do something else.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZMQ8oxpbRYo/TX6fcm2U7TI/AAAAAAAAAT0/3gC10h4Yfqk/s1600/DSC_0440.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZMQ8oxpbRYo/TX6fcm2U7TI/AAAAAAAAAT0/3gC10h4Yfqk/s320/DSC_0440.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Step Three: Keep applying more coats of Mod Podge and letting it dry. If you want to add texture, do some canvas looking swirls with your brush. After the first coat it will hold the pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P4Jd6T5S7bE/TX6fqe4JcqI/AAAAAAAAAT8/aCfD9MTZDPc/s1600/DSC_0468.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P4Jd6T5S7bE/TX6fqe4JcqI/AAAAAAAAAT8/aCfD9MTZDPc/s320/DSC_0468.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zl8wy036Uv0/TX6ftIdDniI/AAAAAAAAAUE/x6DjiHcQGAc/s1600/DSC_0472.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zl8wy036Uv0/TX6ftIdDniI/AAAAAAAAAUE/x6DjiHcQGAc/s320/DSC_0472.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7MGoPataCAc/TX6fwHPqKHI/AAAAAAAAAUM/lNqXVzG7rzw/s1600/DSC_0473.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7MGoPataCAc/TX6fwHPqKHI/AAAAAAAAAUM/lNqXVzG7rzw/s320/DSC_0473.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7BUYOus82Fk/TX6fznc4GPI/AAAAAAAAAUU/b-ENvb3-dlY/s1600/DSC_0476.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7BUYOus82Fk/TX6fznc4GPI/AAAAAAAAAUU/b-ENvb3-dlY/s320/DSC_0476.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IOnh0FZHqsE/TX6f2YdPB3I/AAAAAAAAAUc/FeKezfEkfdk/s1600/DSC_0479.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IOnh0FZHqsE/TX6f2YdPB3I/AAAAAAAAAUc/FeKezfEkfdk/s320/DSC_0479.JPG" /></a></div><br />
OPTIONAL: If you want to reduce tackiness/use as a drink coaster, apply a few coats of clear gloss. I skipped this step because it is winter time, and that stuff smells. P-U! I will probably lacquer them in the warmer months. For now, they can hang out on my shelf!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-85365870503473996892011-03-13T15:23:00.003-04:002011-03-20T19:16:29.563-04:00Upcycled vinyl: Ipod case/change purse/whatever you want it to be!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-awtOaDMZ7R8/TX0agaRB74I/AAAAAAAAATc/g6wMjP4kiVk/s1600/st4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-awtOaDMZ7R8/TX0agaRB74I/AAAAAAAAATc/g6wMjP4kiVk/s320/st4.jpg" /></a></div><br />

<br />
<br />
Ok, so today has been rough for me craft-wise. I am trying desperately to make a good variety of wares for the scholarship tournament, and in the meantime my dog wants to play. I had to stop and go run around with him a few times. Right now, he is sound asleep. Phew. It really is like having a baby again. <br />
<br />
So, one of the things I made today, started with the left over sleeves from the "puppy leather jacket" project (that I have YET to finish). I looked at it and thought, hmm...I see ipod pouch!<br />
<br />
So, in an effort to battle off the crazy doggy, I had to cut out a few photos. However, it is a very basic project, so I think I can give you enough details. You don't have to use vinyl. You can use ANY fabric that is heavy enough: felted wool, leather, oilcloth, etc.<br />
<br />
Step One: Turn sleeve inside out. Determine how you want it to look, sew across bottom. I also sewed up and down the two sides, because I thought it looked a little tighter that way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SS-YhrGvkOw/TX0XpYg3DHI/AAAAAAAAAS0/DKYt8qNsOvY/s1600/st1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SS-YhrGvkOw/TX0XpYg3DHI/AAAAAAAAAS0/DKYt8qNsOvY/s320/st1.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Step Two: Turn it right side out. I decided to add an edge across the top, using a shoelace. I know, why a shoelace? It happened to be an extra I got with a pair of shoes, and I added it to my ribbon bucket. I thought "Hey-this matches nicely." So, that's why a shoelace! Pin (if you are a pinner) and stitch all along the top. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0oXJ3w1iG9U/TX0X_Ah54EI/AAAAAAAAAS8/93x1sALHCNQ/s1600/st2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0oXJ3w1iG9U/TX0X_Ah54EI/AAAAAAAAAS8/93x1sALHCNQ/s320/st2.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Step Three: Choose a closure. I debated on a button, but screwed up when cutting the height of the project, so I had to go with velcro. I didn't want to sew it, so I simply hot glued it. It seems fine!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O4jBuvK-Rt0/TX0YS1ewb2I/AAAAAAAAATE/BfLbmxyf5z8/s1600/st3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O4jBuvK-Rt0/TX0YS1ewb2I/AAAAAAAAATE/BfLbmxyf5z8/s320/st3.jpg" /></a></div><br />
I wish I had beige velcro, but I only had black. So, black it is! <br />
<br />
Step Four: I added a flower and leaves. The leaves/beige color are just the inside of the vinyl. I used the technique for making flowers in my "Jeans and a Sweater" post. They are simply hot-glued together. Make sure the glue is nice and hot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7sfcLcE3WOY/TX0ZmPcxx8I/AAAAAAAAATU/l_cSZgDm7eE/s1600/st4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7sfcLcE3WOY/TX0ZmPcxx8I/AAAAAAAAATU/l_cSZgDm7eE/s320/st4.jpg" /></a></div><br />
So, voila! A cute purse/ipod case. I am thinking it works best as an ipod case...but this can be adapted to make a simple coin purse too!!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13451539925563655665noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-177051102161630330.post-3876581284524830252011-03-12T19:47:00.001-05:002011-03-20T19:16:53.265-04:00Dollar Tree WreathLook at what I did with a Dollar tree wreath and a few scraps!! (note: i did not use "auto" while taking any of these pics...I am practicing!!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5bWqyw5-wLY/TXwTGwB00sI/AAAAAAAAAR8/XkNiVhZpQhI/s1600/DSC_0315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5bWqyw5-wLY/TXwTGwB00sI/AAAAAAAAAR8/XkNiVhZpQhI/s320/DSC_0315.JPG" /></a></div>Step One: Pick your fabric. I chose a pink and a polka dot. I also gathered hot glue, coordinating buttons, and...actually I think that's all.<br />
<br />
Then I made some fabric flowers. If you need help with that, see my "Jeans and a Sweater" post. That will give you a step by step. They are no-sew, just hot glue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dH4BnWbzCtU/TXwSgWHuMlI/AAAAAAAAAR0/UCDKZCBGH98/s1600/DSC_0324.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dH4BnWbzCtU/TXwSgWHuMlI/AAAAAAAAAR0/UCDKZCBGH98/s320/DSC_0324.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Step Two: Tear strips of fabric, the fabric you want to wrap your wreath. I chose pink.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AjfJh5-zAGs/TXwTPnMZSdI/AAAAAAAAASE/7DyiNFL7N8Q/s1600/DSC_0328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AjfJh5-zAGs/TXwTPnMZSdI/AAAAAAAAASE/7DyiNFL7N8Q/s320/DSC_0328.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3fiWifEVQ7E/TXwTTnrrdxI/AAAAAAAAASM/0gRiaL2OZYY/s1600/DSC_0329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3fiWifEVQ7E/TXwTTnrrdxI/AAAAAAAAASM/0gRiaL2OZYY/s320/DSC_0329.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Step Three: Hot glue the fabric to a part of the wreath. Then weave it in and out randomly. If you need to lengthen the strip, hot glue it to the end of the previous strip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q-W5Wnpkdhc/TXwTliX__XI/AAAAAAAAASU/PkIPyT4-meE/s1600/DSC_0333.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q-W5Wnpkdhc/TXwTliX__XI/AAAAAAAAASU/PkIPyT4-meE/s320/DSC_0333.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DD1-fR-KkWc/TXwTpk6bpaI/AAAAAAAAASc/sUY7CGV099k/s1600/DSC_0335.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="214" width="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DD1-fR-KkWc/TXwTpk6bpaI/AAAAAAAAASc/sUY7CGV099k/s320/DSC_0335.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Step Four: Then I made a bow out of the strips of fabric, and a hanger. I hot glued the fabric flowers, the hanger, and the bow. VOILA! Dress up your door for $1 + time + a couple of misfires with a hot glue gun while trying to wrestle fabric out of the mouth of a baby pitbull!<br />
